About Being a Nanny or Caregiver

Q: What kind of experience do I have to have?
A: It all depends on your profession. The more experience the better, of course.

Q: What is the average salary for a Nanny?
A: The average salary for a nanny with at least 2 years of child care experience (not including their own child) and good references varies demographically. A typical number for a 40 hour work week is somewhere between $350 a week to $800 a week, with benefits. When negotiating with your potential families, you will need to consider that your new family employer will have to withhold any state, federal, and social security taxes applicable in your state. Please visit the Concierge section of the website for our Payroll and Tax partners.

Q: Do I have to live-in or out with a family?
A: Nannies can live in or out. It all depends on your needs and the needs of your family employer.

Q: Do I have to have my own transportation?
A: Some nannies will have their own transportation. In certain cities, a car is not necessary for the commute; however it is best to let your family employer know up front if you do not have a dependable automobile. If your family employer requires you to drive their children to soccer practice or dance classes as a part of the job description, you may need to provide a current driving record. You can request a driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicle Division in your state or you can order one from our partners, listed in the Concierge portion of the website. Also it is not unreasonable to ask for a mileage reimbursement from your family employer.

Q: Do I have to do any housekeeping?
A: Generally No. The Nanny’s focus is on childcare, although some may assume child related housekeeping. However, you can negotiate the contract with your family employer to include light housekeeping, cooking, and other duties.

Q: Do the families offer benefits?
A: Most families will offer paid vacations, sick days, holidays and personal days. Some families offer health insurance, however, your salary and benefits will commensurate with your experience.

Q: What kind of salary can I make?
A: Salaries vary, depending on experience, benefits, duties, and of course, everything is negotiable. When negotiating with your family employer, you will need to consider that they will have to withhold any state, federal, and social security taxes applicable in your state.

Q: How long does it usually take to find a job?
A: This varies. Sometimes it is 7 days and other times it can as long as 3 months. It usually takes between 2 and 8 weeks to find a position.

Q: What are the typical hours that a nanny works?
A: A Nanny usually works between 9 and 10 hours per day. The schedule, however, is negotiated between you and your family employer.

Q: Can I bring my child with me to my Nanny Job?
A: There are some families that would want you to bring your child and others that would not be interested in the idea. However, most families would prefer that you do not bring your children with you. Your job as a nanny is to provide the best possible care for your potential family’s children.

Hiring Process

Q: I need to do a criminal background check on my Family Employer. Can you help me?
A: We can’t personally help you. However, you can order a criminal background check. In the Concierge section of the website, you can order criminal background checks for your family employer. This is especially helpful if you are going to be a live-in Nanny. You will need an Authorization and Background Release Form, which is also located in the Resource Center of the website.

Q: My Family Employer is requesting a credit check on me. Is this legal? Can you help me?
A: No. We don’t do credit checks on anyone. However, it is not illegal for a family employer to ask for a credit check, especially for a live-in position. You can always decline the offer, which should not be a requirement for the position you are applying for.

Q: My Family Employer is asking me to be bonded. What do I do?
A: We do not offer a bonding service. You can check with your local insurance agent to see if they offer this service as a courtesy to you. If you still need some help finding an insurance agency, please send us an email at support@citinannies.net.

Q: How do I get paid from my Family Employer?
A: Please visit the Concierge section of the website to find information on our Payroll and Tax partners. You can contact them directly to find out what applies in your state. We strongly discourage those situations where you are being “paid under the table”. This is illegal and if you are caught, you could face serious penalties with the Internal Revenue Service.

Q: I found a great Family Employer on your website, now what?
A: Well, think about interviewing with your family employer on the telephone before meeting in person and we recommend a public place, maybe a park so that you can get a feel of the family is like outside of their home.

Q: What kind of benefits can I request from my Family Employer?
A: Here are recommendations of benefits to request: medical insurance coverage, life insurance, educational assistance, flexible work hours, pre-paid legal services, dental insurance, sick time, personal time, cellular phone account, paid vacation, annual bonuses, gift certificates, entertainment tickets, and the list is endless. However, we think you get the idea of the type of benefits you can request.

Q: I would like a copy of my own background check. Can I request one?
A: Yes. You can order a copy of your background check in the Concierge section of the website. We encourage you to order your own background check, to expedite the recruiting process. Making it easier for your family employers will definitely help you in the long run.

Q: Help! I don’t have a current copy of my CPR or first aid certificate and my employer requires that I have one.
A: We offer Online CPR & First Aid courses through our Partner, Emergency University. Go to Concierge to order your CPR & First Aid training. Upon completion of the course and passing the test, you will be able to obtain your certificate.

Q: Does the family withhold and pay my taxes?
A: Yes, and this is due to Internal Revenue Service Laws.

Q: Is there a fee to register?
A: Registration is free, but you must qualify for our services.

Q: I want to register but I don’t have a Green Card or a Social Security Number. Can you help?
A: Absolutely not! We do adhere to the United States Homeland Security regulations so do we not accept applications from persons who do not have the authorization to work in the United States.

Q: Why do I have to answer so many questions on my questionnaire?
A: The more questions that you answer in your profile, the more likely you will be able to find a specific kind of family that you are looking for. Be candid, and honest about your answers, so that there are no surprises in the interview process.

Q: I don’t have enough time to fill out the rest of the questionnaire; can I save my profile and continue it later?
A: Absolutely! Just fill out the necessary information with the asterisks next to it. You can save your profile and come back to it later when you have time. Remember the more accurate your profile is the more likely you will find your match.

Q: I am in the registration process, and one of the questions asks me for the sum of two digits in my social security number, what is this?
A: We, at www.citinannies.net use a patented technology process to validate the user’s identity when registering on our website. To identify a user’s identity on www.citinannies.net, our system requests a random sum of 2 or 3 included numbers, rather than the entire number or the last 4 digits of the user’s social security number. Then the system scans billions of records in public databases verifying the user’s identity, thus ensuring a safer online referral community, benefiting all registered users. This is not a criminal background check. Although we have taken steps to ensure a safer online community, you are highly encouraged to thoroughly check references.

Q: Why do you authenticate a user’s identity?
A: The vision behind www.citinannies.net is to create a safe, online referral community for families and their caregivers. We understand the need for privacy as well as the quality of care.

Q: Do you store my social security number on the www.citinannies.net website?
A: Absolutely not! This is the reason why we created a prescreening system to validate and authenticate your identity for the safety of all users on www.citinannies.net.

Q: Help! I am in the registration process and I just submitted my information on your website but I got response back that says that you can’t validate my identity.
A: This is because our system is working to validate and authenticate your identity on our secure website. If you moved within the last 6 months or if you have gotten married, you might want to try your previous address and/or your maiden name. The www.citinannies.net system will allow you two attempts before blocking you from registering. At that point you will need to contact Customer Service Support at support@citinannies.net. You will need to include your name, email address, and phone number so that a representative will be able to contact you via telephone to validate your identity.

Q: I am a Nanny, but I am also a personal assistant and a doula as well. Can I register more than one profile on www.citinannies.net?
